CXr Ratchet Furlers for Code 0 and Gennakers

CXr in action

CXr explained

A downwind furling system lets you set and stow a Code 0 or a gennaker from the cockpit instead of wrestling it on the bow. The "r" in CXr is the ratchet: it holds the sail furled while you hoist it, so the sail goes up tight rather than unrolling halfway. To release it, a short sharp pull on the furling line in the direction you want the drum to turn.

The Basic Pack is the furling unit plus the halyard swivel, the usual starting point for a new installation. The furling unit on its own is the upgrade part: buy it if you already have a conventional CX furler and want the ratchet.

Which size?

Size on the boat and the sail, not on the sail alone. Each unit has a displacement and righting moment limit as well as a sail area limit, and all three have to be satisfied.

Model Max sail area Max displacement Max RM at 30° heel Safe working load AT-cable Furling line
CXr15 80 m² 7.7 t 45 kNm 1,500 kg ø11 mm ø8 mm
CXr25 115 m² 14 t 90 kNm 2,500 kg ø13 mm ø10 mm
CXr45 200 m² 28 t 200 kNm 4,500 kg ø15 mm ø12 mm

Code 0, or top-down for a gennaker?

With a Code 0 the anti-torsion cable is built into the luff of the sail, and the sail furls from the bottom up.

A gennaker or asymmetric spinnaker has no luff cable, so it needs a tack swivel to furl from the top down. The tack swivel lets the cable turn while the sail's tack stays put, and that converts a standard CXr into a top-down system. Two versions:

  • Tack Swivel for Nail Terminal — slides onto a Seldén Nail terminal and locks with a set screw. The straightforward choice if your cable is nail-terminated.
  • Tack Swivel Adaptor, Fork/Eye type — an eye to the drum below, and a fork above that takes a Nail terminal, a tackboard or a standard Seldén thimble. Costs more, fits more terminations.

Both have a machined aluminium body and a stainless tack ring on Torlon® ball bearings, and take a Dyneema lashing to the sail's tack.

What else you need

  • The sail. A Code 0 with the right AT-cable diameter integrated in the luff, terminated for your CXr size. This is why the system is specified with a sailmaker rather than ordered off a shelf.
  • An endless furling line in the diameter above, sold separately in several lengths.
  • A Nail Terminal Kit if you are terminating the AT-cable yourself — one terminal plus nails, in ø11, ø13 and ø15 mm to match the cable.
  • Optional: a 2:1 halyard purchase system, and fairleads to lead the furling line back to the cockpit.

Technical specifications

  • Composite drum for low weight, with a polished stainless steel line guide and sealed steel bearings.
  • Spring-loaded lock with a captive pin on both the fork and the halyard swivel.
  • The halyard swivel carries an integrated rubber fender to protect the mast.
  • CXr furling units also fit CX installations, and the nail terminal kits are shared with the CX and CXe ranges.
  • These systems are supplied through Seldén's sailmaker network, which delivers the sail, the hardware and the installation together. Contact a dealer to specify a system for your boat.
